“If you don’t read the news, you’re uninformed. If you read the news, you’re misinformed.”
2 months ago I built an AI-driven news aggregator.
Why?
Because I wanted to be informed. Not uninformed. Not misinformed. Just… regular informed.
So I needed to extract the 1% needle of useful information from the haystack of propaganda, distraction, emotional manipulation, political theater, and celebrity garbage.
I wanted to know that one or two stories a day that help me stay informed and take action in my personal life without subjecting my mind to the firehose of online crap.
In other words, I wanted to stay informed and not be actively mis-informed.
By default, AI models have no idea what’s relevant or important. In fact the default assumption is something like, “This news was syndicated a lot, it must be important.”
Over the past two months I’ve been tuning it. It has a “team” of AI agents that crawl through dozens of sources and hundreds of stories, and rank them based on their importance, relevance to the average American, and whether they contain anything actionable. And they review each other’s decisions.
Every news piece has to end with something you can do about it, so you’re empowered to act and not scared into submission.
A few weeks ago, the daily news said this:
I felt pretty satisfied because on that particular day, of the 189 stories it scanned, none were important enough. My mind was free to continue with my day. There was nothing for me to know.
Today was different. It scanned 402 news stories. It determined 400 were not relevant, propaganda, political theater, or celebrity nonsense, and 2 stories were important and actionable. Here’s the 2 stories it picked.
I think it did a pretty good job.
